HitmanPro.Kickstart – # 1
create a bootable USB drive

boxshot2-en

If your computer is locked by ransomware like the GVU / BKA or FBI-Trojan, there´s  a very nice solution to unlock it. The dutch company Surfright created the software HitmanPro, which is able to create a bootable USB-stick, to track down ransomware and unlock affected PC´s. With the botfrei.de-Edition of HitmanPro you can start your computer from a USB flash drive to remove malware that has ransomed (locked) your computer and does not allow you to access it.

To create a HitmanPro.Kickstart USB flash drive you need to have access to a computer allowing you to download and start HitmanProHitmanPro will automatically determine whether you have a 32- or 64-bit version of Windows installed and will install the appropriate version.

Download HitmanPro for all Windows versions

You will also need a USB flash drive with a capacity of at least 32Mbytes.
Note: the contents of the USB flash drive will be erased during the creation process.

Download HitmanPro to your harddrive

Once you downloaded the program, just execute it. It could be, that you will have to rightklick on it and run the hitmanpro.exe in “admin-mode”.

run HitmanPro from the folder, you downloaded it

run HitmanPro from the folder, you downloaded it

HitmanPro will start and will immediately search for a new Version on the Surfright servers.

After its update, HitmanPro is ready to check your computer for malware, or create a bootable USB flash drive, to check and clean an infected PC with it.
Just click on the small Ninja icon   and HitmanPro will take you to create the USB Stick.

In 4 easy steps, HitmanPro will build a bootable USB flash drive, the program will find all attached USB Sticks and will ask on which it shall be installed to.

choose the USB stick, where HitmanPro will be instaled

choose the USB stick, where HitmanPro will be installed

Just go ahead, choose the appropriate USB Drive and HitmanPro will contact the Surfright servers to get the most actual version installed on the drive.

After that, the installation is finished and in the 4th step you can unplug the USB drive and use it to unlock an infected computer.

USB Stick creation is done - The USB stick is now ready for action

USB Stick creation is done – The USB stick is now ready for action

If you encounter any problems within the creation of an USB flash drive, it might be, that the USB drive is already in use by Windows.
So if you see the error message : “#5, lock” please make sure, that the USB Drive is not accessed by any AntiVirus Software, or that you haven´t opened it in Windows- Explorer. Any error message, you would see in HitmanPro can be investigated by having a look at the Microsoft´s error message codes, the most common should be #2 ( error  file not found ), which would be a hint for a incomplete download of HitmanPro ( just restart the program and try it again ) or #5 ( device is already in use ) which would tell you to close all other programs that can access the USB Flash drive.

Now, your USB-Stick is ready for action and can be used to start an infected PC to get rid of Ransomware.

In the second part of our workshop, we´ll use the HitmanPro.Kickstart USB flash drive to clean a PC from Ransomware.

Infected machine is 32 bit. Only available machine to download Hitman is 64 bit and I can download only the 64 bit version. I know it is said that 64 bit will work with both 32 & 64 systems.
But in my efforts, HitmanPro does go through the steps identified in the user guides until the FBI-trojan takes over again – but that is the end — nothing else happens! Everything is right back to where it started – the machine is still not usable.
Is that because I am trying to use a 64 bit recovery program on a 32 bit system? Thanks.

Hi and thanks for the Tools and great efforts,
Still, I cannot get around the #5 error. Can you post, how to disable any functions potentially accessing the USB drive?
I thought I had disabled media devices under autostart and the Avira active scanner (free Version) but still it does not work to download >HitmanPro.

    Best regards
    Axel

    • Hallo axeid,

Here is what Edwin Engels from Surfright had to say:

Edwin Engels from Surfright wrote:Regarding the problem with the error message “#5, lock”:
This message is shown whenever another process is holding a lock on the USB flash drive. Most times this is because there is a window open which shows the contents of the flash drive. Sometimes Windows is configured to show the contents of a flash drive whenever a new one is inserted into the PC. These windows must be closed before the flash drive can be written. Also the failure can occur because of another AV program, inspecting the contents of the flash drive. In that case, waiting a few seconds and then trying to write again will succeed most of the times.

So possibly also engages your AV software on the USB-Stick.

  8. Please help
I have the DOJ ransom program virus – system locked
I made the HitmanPro Flash boot drive
The Boot USB drive contains Three Programs:

    HitmanPro 9KB
    HitmanPro x64 9649 KB
    Kickstarter 141 KB

    Is this correct?

When I insert the Flash drive and choose “boot from USB Drive as the boot and turn on the computer , the screen shows the following 2-line message:

    “ couldn’t open drive multi (0) disk (0) partition (0) partition (2)”
    “NTLDR: couldn’t open drive multi (0) disk (0) partition () partition (2)”

my computer is a Dell Dimension 4600 with Intel Pentium and windows XP home edition.

I’ve tried making a second boot drive but get same result.

I will definitely purchase the Hitman Pro program gladly if I can get it to work.

    any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jim

    • Hi Jim,
      NTLDR: Couldn’t open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)

disk(0) refers to the hard drive, so it seems your PC is trying to boot from that instead of booting from the USB flash drive.

You need to invoke the boot menu (with the USB flash drive already plugged in) and choose USB, but be aware that the BIOS on some older computers does not support booting from a USB device even though you’ve made the device itself bootable.

In that case, updating the BIOS to a later version might add that option to the boot menu.

I have used HitmanPro kickstart before and it worked fine then. Now I have again the PC hostage, but Hitman Pro isn’t able to delete the virus. The virus won’t let me go into safe mode (restarts automatically), even with booting with HitmanPro the screen returns. I tried all options including #3 in HitmanPro menu. CTRL+ALT+DEL allows me to select “Start Task Manager” but it just goes back to the hostage screen. Help ?

    Hi
I dont get it, way can´t you download a 32 bit Hitman pro kickastart (or S.Ed) and
install it to USB on Win.7 64 bit system when you can run almost all 32 bit program in
    64 bit system.
Its more likly you have an old 32 bit computer than 2 or more 64 bit computer I think.

    • Hallo Roffe,

When creating the HitmanPro.Kickstart to USB both versions are written to the stick. It does not matter if you install it on a 32bit system or 64bit system.

    HI,

I used 64Gb USB flash drive to install and use Hitman pro which worked wonderfully.

The problem i have is that is created a 3.76Gb partition and has unallocated 28Gb left on the USB drive. I cannot format or restore the 64Gb stick to its orignal glory and i am stuck with just 3.76Gb partition.

Does anyone have any ides on how to restore back to NTFS and open up the other 32Gb which appears to be missing.

I have tried to use convert in command promt with admin right with no joy and eveything else i have tried has failed.

    Many thanks,
    Mark.

    • Hallo Mark Cashmore,

Yes the HitmanPro formatted the USB flash drive in FAT32 format, invite you sometime down the program and format the drive into NTFS format, then you can re-use the full 64 GB.

      best regards,
      TB, ABBZ
